Margaret & Peter Hunziker
by Robin Harvie
In 1974, Margaret and Peter Hunziker moved to Cochrane from Edmonton and Calgary early in their marriage.
Late in the summer, Margaret attended a service at All Saints. When she was signing the guest book, Mrs. Hill, the priest's wife, came up to her and introduced herself. She said that there was an ACW meeting in the next week, and that someone would pick her up.
That beginning was marked by many other greetings of welcome. Thus began the course of Margaret's church life, which continues to this day.
Margaret soon joined the Altar Guild, and served for many years with that group.
The Hunziker's first son, Michael, was born in December 1974. Their second son, Kurt arrived in June of 1976.
They attended Sunday School as little boys, and participated in Christmas concerts and competed at Church picnics. When they were ten or eleven years old, they attended a course so they could take Communion. During those early years, Margaret taught Sunday School.
Margaret participated in ACW activities and served as president. She sang in the choir when one was organized for Christmas or other special occasions.
She sat on vestry from 1977 to 1990, and was People's Warden and Rector's Warden during Rev. Lemmon's time as priest. She retired for a few years, and then for three years was Rector's Warden for Derek Dunwoody. Many times Margaret served as a Synod delegate.
Peter and Margaret helped organize and attended campout weekends when Dick Lemmon was priest. Peter would cook one meal, and there were parishioners who drove out to the campsite just for that dinner. Peter also helped with the cooking for many years at the Pancake Supper.
When the ACW embroidered the Nativity scene, Peter crafted a plaque with the names in calligraphy of all those who had put a stitch into the picture.
He also was a great help for many years at the ACW's apple pie making bees, operating the apple corer.
Margaret conducted services of Morning Prayer on Wednesdays before and during Derek Dunwoody's years, as well as on occasional Sundays.
In 2005, she became a Licensed Layreader, and continues today as a layreader during Rev. Greg Clark's tenure.
