The Nativity Embroidery

by Robin Harvie

In 1991, a member of the Anglican Church Women, Vicki Savage, suggested that as a project to celebrate the centennial of the building of our church, i.e. 1992, we embroider a five-piece nativity scene.

With her encouragement, a few women did the majority of the work, but the A.C.W. also undertook to have every member of the parish put in a stitch.

This included the men and the children. Even Bishop Barry Curtis worked a stitch when he visited us.

The work is beautiful, and very intricate. It proved to be a bigger task than was anticipated, and in fact the entire project was not completed until 1996.

The separate pieces were framed in a series of graduated frames and hung as one picture for Christmas 1996.

At All Saints, it was displayed on a side wall during most of the year, but was hung above the altar from Christmas to Epiphany (January 6th).
